Or that it's simply understood that each season the same
ishermen occupy the same spots and nobody new is allocated space?
I think what they are saying is its hard to find a place that someone hasn't
already "staked out." Maybe they were gentlemen and did not want to take a spot
away from a guy that was accustomed to fishing there. But, to my knowledge
there has never been any real official "Claim" to a spot. That would be akin
to the old "claim" during the gold rush........
Remember Hodie Snitch? He was a "tough guy" and he tried to take away Andy's
fishing spot. Andy fought him for it. (So he says!) But, if old Howard showed
up on opening day he would either have to find a spot that wasn't already
occupied or he would have to be like Hodie Snitch.....Or maybe they were just
hinting that it would be very crowded.......
Also, there is something "unsportsmanlike" about walking right up and fishing
next to a spot where somebody is already fishing. It's like interrupting,
getting in the way or maybe even "interloping...."
