Hey Mayberry friends,
I too, got to indulge in penny candy on occasion. Those ocassions, however,
weren't financed by an allowance, or even by an ocassional windfall from
Mom. My penny candy dreams sometimes became realities when I was
ocassionally asked to run an errand for a neighbor. My pay from shopping for
and lugging a couple of large bags of groceries to the neighbor's home, was
usually 10cents. For that dime, I was also expected to carry the groceries
inside the house and put them in the kitchen. I was thrilled to get that
dime though, and those opportunities happened rarely. Most of my penny candy
mad-money was earned by taking long walks in search of empty pop bottles.
Each "empty" garnered 2cents. That was in the mid-fifties. On a good hunt,
I'd usually pick up a half a dozen bottles. Taking a trip down a paved ally
beside our house, I'd cross the street, and then not many feet ahead was a
small "Mom & Pop" grocery which was most kids' dream haunt. Most of us
young-uns called it "The Little Store", but it may have had another
name. This store was directly across the street from our school which taught
grades 1-12. On my trips to "The Little Store", among my favorites, I'd
usually pick B B Bats (a penny a piece), Kits Caramels(a penny a pack) and
Chum Gum (a penny a pack). If I was of a mind to blow a whole nickle on one
item, I'd choose a "Sugar Daddy", or a "Slow Poke" sucker. If it was during
school time, my choices might have more to do with what candies were of a
size that could more easily be smuggled in and eaten in class, without a
teacher noticing. Of course "The Little Store" also carried Smith Brothers
cough drops. Cherry flavor most resembled candy. I found that if I went into
a coughing fit, I could get away with openly indulging on those sweet drops!
My brother's two favorites were lemon drops and cinnamon balls. I don't
recall how many of those you could get for a penny. I too liked the lemon
drops, but the cinnamon balls were a bit hot for my taste. I didn't always
get caught sneaking treats during class, but there were those times when I
did. Oh well, I've lived to tell about it!
You All Have A Mayberry Day!
