Congratulations to Neil Bentley. He guessed both of the Mayberry characters I was thinking of with academic doctorates. They were Rev. Dr. Hobart M. Tucker (D.D.) and Dr. Frank Smith (Ph.D.). Frank Smith is the only one I know that is 100% certain to have the PhD since Helen said it. Dr. Merle Osmond was a PPD according to Barney, but we can only guess this was likely a "Barneyism" for PhD.
