I like the ideas of being Laura Lee Hobbs at the Dime Store or Ellie at the Drug Store. Those are happening places in Mayberry so I'm sure there'd be lots of interesting occasions. That got me to thinking about female character's places of employment. There's the langirie shop, but that atmosphere seemed furtile ground for gossip. The diner, but having waitressing experience I know how hard that can be. County nurses had to put up with stubborn farmers. Teachers, maybe, as long as Ernest T didn't try for another diploma. Sarah knew everything, but I worry about her staying indoors all the time. The Beauty Parlor, Library or Bank - probably all nice places to work.
Then I decided that being Millie at Boysingers Bakery was the best fit for me. You'd get to meet people and help with happy occasions like birthday party cakes. You could break a few cookies and dent a cake every now and then for the kids. Plus the Boysingers probably let you take home the extra cream buns and donuts that didn't sell.
