We all know how important the Mayberry Gazette was to all the folks of Mayberry. Even Opie got into the newspaper business at one time and Barney was a sports reporter albeit was a very short career. I spent today in my hometown and I visited a friend who is the town historian. He gave me the loan of a huge box full of old newspapers that were printed in Dorchester from the early 1940's until 1970 when the paper went out of business. It is like a time machine for me. In just the first paper I scanned through I found an article about my best friend's sister who fell off a horse and had a concussion, another good friend's wedding article, a next door neighbor's obituary, a story about a classmate being a sponsor for her little niece's baptism, the story of another good friend's commission as a Second Lieutenant in the army, and a story about my cousin purchasing the new dairy route in town which included two milk trucks, with the original paint. I am having so much fun scanning the articles and sending them to the families. Fortunately I have kept in touch with many of these folks since leaving my hometown in 1967. There was even a large advertisement for a woodworking factory saying they needed work. I got a job there a few weeks after that ad was in the paper. I made $1.25 an hour and could get 8 cents an hour more if I worked nights.
