In "Opie's Drugstore Job" his first customer just wants a glass of water.
He thanks Opie and walks out - there was no charge for the water. When I
was real little, my uncle and cousin lived with my grandmother. I stayed at
Grandmother's during the day while Mom worked at the mill. My uncle was out
of work so my cousin and I went with him to look for a job at another mill.
We sat in the car in the heat and waited for him. It took a long time and
we got thirsty so we walked the block back into "town" where there was a
drugstore. We asked for a glass of water but was told we couldn't get one
unless we bought something to eat. When we asked if we could get a paper
cup, we were told cups were a penny. We didn't have any money so we just
walked back to the car. Wasn't a big deal, but I've never forgotten how
mean it was not to give a couple of kids a drink of water.
