50 years ago was a long time ago when TAGS first aired. Thinking about this the other day, I thought about the important things that happened in my life back in 1960. As most years there were great experiences and bad experiences. I remember 1960 mostly in that it was the year that my father died at the age of 54. It was also the year I turned 14 which meant I entered the doors of high school for the first time and that amazing and wonderful period of my life would begin. I met my first real girlfriend in 1960. Quiet, bashful Sharon and we used to dance to old records during noon hour in our high school gym. By the way, Sharon and I still keep in touch by email, much to the delight of both my wife and her husband and we are able to share some wonderful memories of our young days. Back in 1960 I earned my spending money by setting pins in our bowling alley, walking the parking lot by the dance hall every Sunday morning looking for lost change, and selling newspapers on the front steps of our little drug store on the Sundays when Mr. and Mrs. Weix went to Packer games. My summer days were spent fishing at the old mill pond, playing touch football in our neighbors hay field, and camping out using an old blanket as a tent. Winter nights meant ice skating on the frozen mill pond while the fish there grew a bit bigger and awaited my hook and worm that would once again appear the next summer. Many of my winter days in 1960 were spent throwing wood in the basement and then piling it up in neat rows while it awaiting its final farewell in the old undependable wood furnace. Most winter nights in 1960 were spend under heaps of blankets and winter coats while trying to sleep as our old house had no central heat and we could often see our breaths in the air as we tried to go to sleep. It seems like a lifetime ago when all these events happened in my life, but the memories of so many of them are kept so alive and vivid thanks to The Andy Griffith Show. So how about it folks. I would love to hear what the rest of you were doing back in 1960 when TAGS first became a part of our lives. But you know, I have a sneaky feeling a great many of you were not even around yet back in 1960.
