Okay Ken, I was around, but just barely.  In the fall of 1960, I entered Mrs.
Moomaw's first grade class at Burlington Elementary School.  Our school was
crowded as more families were moving from Roanoke City into Roanoke County.
Poor Mrs. Moomaw, a young widow in her early 40's, had 41 first graders in that
one classroom.  I know today they would never dream of putting that many
children in one class.  But she did a terrific job and as far as I know we were
all able to make it to grade two.  I also remember that on Monday nights, my
family watched a new show called The Andy Griffith Show.  My father had been a
big fan of What It Was Was Football and since we lived only two hours away from
Mt. Airy, it was like the show starred a hometown boy.  Another thing that
happened that year was something I got a spanking for.  Our house was only the
3rd house built in what would soon become a large subdivision so there weren't
many other kids to play with.  Then a family built a nice split level across
the
street and moved in with 3 daughters, one of which was my age and I thought she
was beautiful.  We played together out in the yard often.  The lady who lived
behind our house had several flower beds that were overflowing with blooming
flowers.  My friend got the idea that our mother's would really love for us to
bring them some beautiful flowers.  I had a pen knife with a half broken blade
that my father had given me so we set about cutting flowers for our mothers.  I
must say, for 6 year olds, we did a great job devastating our neighbors flower
beds.  After we had cut what must have been the 50 or 60th flower, she came
screaming out of the house.  My mother came running out of the house and was
told what we had done.  Well, I heard those famous words we've all heard, "Wait
til your father gets home".  I tell people my father only spanked me about 4
times in my life and that was all it took me to realize I didn't want it to be
5
times.  Although I'm sure each of those spankings help make me a better person.
