It is an absolutely gorgeous winter night here in Wisconsin. A fresh two inches of snow fell tonight so I went outside and took a nice walk. The first thing I noticed was there was no one else outside at all. I guess everyone was inside watching TV, playing video games, playing on the computer, or texting their friends. It is the kind of night that takes me back to my childhood when we would go ice skating on the small village pond that had a small wooden warming shed ;or we would go on a hayride followed by a bon fire and wiener roast. They closed the ice skating rink at the school on our corner last year because no one was using it. Kids had to go to the Hobbs Indoor Sports Arena to skate. The one remaining farmer who did hayrides closed down too because of possible law suits and high insurance costs. Skating outdoors and riding on a hay wagon with friends on a cold winter night are two more simple pleasures that many kids will never experience. I get a little melancholy after the holidays. That reminds me, I had a girlfriend once who called me her melancholy baby. She said it was because I had a stomach like a melon and a face like a collie.
