As far as I can remember we never saw a fire burning in the Taylors' fireplace. From a production standpoint, it would have been very complicated (not to mention dangrous), to have real firewood burning in a "prop" fireplace, since there would not have been a flue or anything.
Trivia time: name an occasion where we DO see a real fire burning inside a structure in Mayberry (candles don't count). There are numerous correct answers.
