Hey, Mayberry friends. We also had a neighborhood store that sold everything from gas/oil to hardware to fishing supplies, candy, groceries, school supplies and most anything a rural home might need without making a trip to town. You could also buy bologna and lunch meat by the slice or by the pound and have a sandwich made right there. Bologna was sliced from a roll and the lunch meat was sliced from a long square can. (The store owner would ask, "Is that thick enough?") It seems it tasted so much better than the pre-packaged, pre-sliced meat you buy today. He also had a small air compressor so us boys could pump up our bike tires, no need to put quarters in a machine. We could also sell empty drink bottles to the owner for 3 cents each but I always traded mine for candy. There happened to be a pay phone outside but I don't think I ever seen someone use it. If I needed to call home for something I could always go inside and use their private phone (probably a party line.) One more thing, if you happened to need something at night or on Sunday you could go to the store owners home (he lived next door) and he would open up for you. Just try to get a convience store to do that today. Ya'll know that this was what things were like in the '60s when TAGS was being filmed.
Larry in Lincolnton Please keep your memories coming 'cause I love this stuff. _______________________________________________ WBMUTBB mailing list [email protected] http://www.mayberry.com/tagsrwc/wbmutbb/
