For  me and many of my friends, Mayberry lives on, an indelible impression
within our hearts and minds. So deep is that imprint, that we can sit back in
the quiet of an evening on our "Mayberry front porch", relax, "What's your
hurry", close our eyes, and go back to that quaint N.C. town we so much admired
and the people we loved.
Last night I dreamed I went to Mayberry, and you know who greeted me on the
sidewalk, none other than Choir Director John Masters, himself.
He said, "Welcome to mayberry Vic. Are you ready for the tour ?" I
nervously nodded.
John motioned for me to follow.. As we walked along Main Street the sweet
aroma of Witch hazel wafted along a gentle breeze from Floyd's Barber shop..The
door was open so we stepped inside. It was eerily quiet. There was the barber
chair, a cloean white barber's apron, folded neatly, lay over the back of the
chair.
The small table next to the window held the checker board, all it's pieces in
place.
Near the back of the room I saw a coat rack. Floyd's white jacket hung limp
from a hook. the end of a comb was visible in the breast pocket. I walked over
to it and gently touched a sleeve. For a second I wanted to take it off the
hook and put it on, but somehow I suddenly I felt myself looking upon it as
though it were the Holy Shroud. I couldn't do it. After all Floyd hung it there
and I'm sure that's where he expected to find it when he returned.
I brushed back a tear, hoping John hadn't seen. It was hard for me to accept
the fact, that not only had we lost our beloved Floyd, but for all intense and
purpose the barber shop was gone too.
We stepped out the door to the sidewalk to resume our journey.
