Andy refered to Barney as his cousin 2 or 3 times early on, never after the
first season. But over the years, I have put on my thinking cap and I have
come to a few conclusions. Andy or Barney neither one said that they were
"first cousins", but let's assume they were.
Then one Andy's parents and one of Barney's parents must have been brother or
sister. Listening to Barney talk, Barney's father must have been blood kin to
Andy's side of the family. The reason I say that, is that Barney talks of his
mother numerous times and Andy listens like this is all news to him. If
Barney's mother had grown up as a sibling to Andy's father or mother, Andy
would have been a lot more familiar with her. I was raised out in the country,
and as a child I sat at my mother and father's knee while they related tales of
growing up and what all they did with their siblings. Barney only talked of
his father a couple of times. One time striking his matches on the rock, and
the other time getting a speeding ticket from the sewer inspector.
On a similar note, if Aunt Bea was a true aunt to Andy, then she must have been
a sibling to one of Andy's parents. Aunt Bea must have been from the side of
the family tree opposite Barney's father, because she never speaks of knowing
Barney when he was growing up. The foregoing are facts. But now for a
conjucture. In my mind I feel that Aunt Bea was sister to Andy's mother, and
Barney's father and Andy's father were brothers. The only thing that bothers
me about this, is that Aunt Bea never speaks of her sister or brother who was
Andy's father or mother. I know this is a little convaluted, but following
Andy like I do, and coming from a very large family out in the country, I am
always facinated with who is kin to whom, etc.

is the baby. If he had been the oldest, he might have been an only child.
