I watched the first episode of Mayberry RFD last night, "Andy and Helen Get
Married". What a beautiful and simple wedding they had. A far cry from the
many thousands that so many young people spend today. And look how nice
Charlene's wedding was and she wore her ma's dress and they got married
underneath a tree. My wife and I had a fairly simple wedding. Because I was
teaching and I wanted my students to be able to attend, we got married in my
classroom at noon hour. Then we all went down to the school cafeteria and had
the reception. They were serving lunch anyway so I figured it would be a good
way to save money for furniture. We had a lovely meal of corn dogs, baked
beans, and French fries. And it only cost us a dollar a plate. We couldn't
stay around school long as we had to catch our bus at 3:30. I was chaperoning
a football game that night so my wife and I spent our first few hours of wedded
bliss doing that. I made an extra $20 too. But I made it up to my wife the
next day by taking her on a river cruise. It was the first time she had ever
been in a canoe so she was a bit nervous. But it all worked out well and we
are till married after 40 years. I think the cruise was the highlight of her
life because even after 40 years she still talks about it once in a while, and
whenever she does tears come to her eyes. So for you young folks out there who
are contemplating a big expensive wedding, I would suggest something smaller
and more intimate.
