I really wonder if Mr. Schwamp was really wearing a rug. I think it might have have just been the light. Kind of like in the old Rimshaw house.

Regarding air conditioning; in the episode where the church was trying to decide whether to fix the leaning church or buy new choir robes it was brought up that the church voted down air conditioning and the topic came up whenever there was a hot Sunday. I think the only time anyone ever perspired in Mayberry was when Andy was shingling the roof for Mr. Wheeler. Other than that I don't recall seeing any perspiration. Even on the hottest of days folks in Mayberry wore their long sleeve shirts and suit coats and ties; except for Opie when he came down to breakfast dressed like a naked savage. Why even Martha Clark wore her full length mink coat on hot days as did Aunt Bee after she won hers of the TV show. Even when they went to the car show in Raleigh they wore suits while riding in an open convertible in the hot sun. And dark ones at that.

Curiouser and Curiouser.
