All this talk about thermostats and turning up or down the A/C! Gosh, the Mayberry of my childhood not only did not have A/C, but it had no thermostats at all! We just threw more coal into the furnace firebox when we wanted more heat. If we wanted more cool, we just ate ice cream. We ate a LOT of ice cream! Sadly, Miss Ellie wasn't there to serve it. We made it ourselves right after we milked the cows. (Yes, I'm still on the straight and narrow, for I do remember two cows in Mayberry. Or, I guess they were bulls.) Was anything said on TAGS about heating homes and businesses? I'm sure they must have had furnaces, for when Andy and Aunt Bee considered buying the new house, the seller's son spilled the beans and told them that the crack in the furnace was getting bigger every day. Regarding UP or DOWN directions in cooling: In general, in laymen's terms, turning something UP means you want more of it. Turning it DOWN means you want less of it . . . . more cooling or less cooling. So, in this sense, turning your A/C UP means you want more cooling (not a higher degree of temperature) and turning it DOWN means you want less cooling (not a lower degree of temperature).
