I had my very first parade of the season today and there is only one word to
describe it. BIG. But I only made it half way. It is a long parade route and
about half way there we stop on a bridge so the Gold Star Mothers can toss a
wreath into the Chippewa River. My wife drove the mothers in our '66 Chevy
Convertible. I shut off my car as it takes a while for the ceremony. When it
came time to move again, the Squad Car would not start as the battery was dead.
I had been at a car show the other night and I ran the light and siren a lot
for kids and then just drove a couple of blocks home. Today I ran the siren
and light again through the parade and it ran down the battery even more. The
car was a big hit, even as I sat at the side of the bridge and watched the
parade pass me by. I kept my humor though and I told everyone passing me that
if they saw Gomer or Goober they should send him back with the tow truck. So
the Police Department Honor Guard who were escorting me had to go on their
merry way without me. Luckily my wife and I each had our cell phones so I
could call her and have her come help me. She was ahead of me in the parade. I
had jumper cables and we got going again. You can bet I am going to give the
car a complete "trouble check" before Thursday night's car show and next
Sunday's parade. I am even going to carry a spare battery with me. I got one
from my neighbor's hearing aid. In any event it was a fun time and the folks
who did see me really applauded and shouted out "Hey Barney" when I went by.
Hopefully things will go better next week.
