Folks have been asking about the map on the wall behind Andy's desk. Most of the time there was one large map there, but in a few episodes there are two, and one of them is clearly the east coast of the southern U.S.
For the first year or two, the one large map was actually a map of eastern Idaho and western Montana (the river between the two states was easily recognizable), and most of the time, it was hanging upside down! Later, the one large map was actually of the Cincinnati metropolitan area. We had wondered about this map for years, and finally somebody (I think it was Dennis) was able to figure it out based on the bodies of water that were visible on the map. Seems like I remember an old MacGyver episode in which a crime was solved by figuring out a map based on the shape of a lake. Jim Clark and Ken Beck's book "The Andy Griffith Show" contains a nice version of the map labelled with places mentioned on The Show. I think Jack Fellenzer may have done a lot of the work on that one.
