You are a citizen of Mayberry.Someone has suggested creating a Mayberry time
capsule which will
be opened one hundred years from today. You have been honored to submit one
Mayberry related
item. What ONE item would you choose to place in the capsule...and why?

I will start the 'ol ball rolling first. My choice would be a current copy of
The Mayberry Gazette.As to the
why,the answer is multi-faceted.One would be hard pressed to believe the copy
content of a town a
hundred years past. There would be the obligatory human interest section, the
sports page,the comic
page, obituary section. It would have all the trappings of a modern newspaper, but
with a hometown
spin to it.

The difference is what The Mayberry Gazette would NOT contain. No drug induced
murder of a family
member. No endless list of DUI names. No gang names spray painted on store
owners' places of business.
No tainting of Halloween candy. The citizens worked and did not depend on
government stimulus
packages or monthly checks to single parents.People married first and then had
children.The children
had respect for their elders.

The Gazette would not allow political smear advertising. The Gazette would still
do a story and photograph
of a bumbling deputy...because the deputy was not only an authority figure, but
also because he was a
friend to one and all.The Mayberry Sheriff's Department was never investigated
for accepting a bribe or
accused of police brutality.

A hundred years later, people would think the Gazette was a work of
fiction.Manners,honesty,civility,
respect, all these virtues would be a novel concept to modern day readers.

When you submit your suggestion,it is up to your descretion as to whether it is
serious or humourous.
Have fun.
