Ken, About Opie being told to take a bath: It just so happens that last night I watched "A wife for Andy" Opie comes in all dirty and beat up from a fight he had at school. He tells Andy he will have to go talk to Miss Crump because she wanted to see all the boys mothers who were in the fight. That leads to Barney saying his "How long are you gonna try to be both father and mother to that boy" line.
Anyway, Opie is all dirty and Andy tells him to go home and find that rag he likes so much and get cleaned up. I think it is reasonable to take this as Andy telling Opie to go home and take a bath. Barn and Thel in Arkansas Ps. My mom also grew up without an indoor bathroom and thus without daily baths. (this was in the late 60's and early 70's so a lot of kids at her school had bathrooms but they were poor and in the country and were a little behind in getting one) Anyway she was elected the homecoming queen of her school. I always thought it was neat that the girl with no bathroom was homecoming queen.
