Today my wife and I participated in a most enjoyable parade. It was in a very
very small town away from any main highways, so it is basically a small farming
community. The parade consisted of mostly tractors with machinery, many
horses, old steam engines, two floats with area queens, and those types of
things. It was by far the smallest parade of the eleven we have done this
summer. It reminded me of the small parades that the folks of Mayberry
enjoyed. There wasn't even a police car at the beginning of the parade as
traffic in the community is very limited. But the people who came to watch
were some of the most engaging and down to earth folks that I have met this
summer. A number of them would walk up to me in the middle of the street and
ask a question about the car or just thank us for coming. One gentleman told
me that there were two farmers just outside of town who were selling vegetables
along side the road. I have a boom box mounted on my rear bumper ( or I should
say my car's rear bumper) and it repeatedly plays "The Fishing Hole" during the
entire parade. It is so much fun watching people whistling along as they hear
the music coming. We have one remaining parade at our large International Folk
Festival next weekend. It has been such a privilege to travel to eleven towns
this summer to share the wonderful world of Mayberry. Literally many thousands
of people were touched by Mayberry during all the parades and car shows we have
attended. Many of those folks have been Mayberry fans since its inception, and
many of the younger folks were exposed to it for the very first time. If fact
I am returning to the small community this afternoon to take part in their
Harvest Festival car show.
