Well, I don't have any specific knowledge about this, but I'll throw in my two
cents. As a life-long wearer of glasses, I can tell you that it is common to
get new frames when you need new lenses, especially if it's been a few years
since you last had them changed. During my adulthood, my eyes have changed
very slowly. So when I do need new lenses, the old frames are usually out of
style or just plain wearing out. My suspicion would be that Howard McNear
needed new lenses during this time and simply got new frames while he was at
it. Now, if the glasses were merely props, then I would say that the choice of
frames would be up to the prop department or the producer/director. But Howard
McNear was obviously a genuine glasses wearer, so I'm sure the change of frames
was his choice. The wire frames he used to wear were commonly worn in the
fifties and earlier. By the sixties, they were probably harder to find, so he
got a more updated style. That would be my take on it, anyway.
