I have come to believe that the great and gifted writers of TAGS had a
glass breaking compellsion. They sure did write in a lot of scenes that
involved breaking glass. Of course Ernest T. certainly broke plenty of
windows. Barney broke the bookcase glass in the courthouse with his
slingshot. Cousin Virgil also broke it and I also believe Newton Monroe
did so. Barney broke the new courthouse window with his gun while trying to
arrest Ernest T. Malcolm Merriweather wasn't in town very long before he
broke the upstairs window in the Taylor home. Opie and Arnold broke a
window in the Rimshaw house and the new bully in town broke the streetlamp.
Even Andy broke a window once when he was angry and picked up a rock and
flung it and we could hear the glass breaking. The Boone's broke some
perfectly good dishes during their frequent friendly arguments. Even when
the Taylors were in Hollywood and visited the filming "Sheriff Without A
Gun" the actor portraying Andy broke a window so he could shoot at the
Culhane Brothers. When Otis' brother Ralph locked himself up in the
Mayberry jail he dropped a bottle of booze on the floor and it smashed.
Opie dropped a dish on the floor and broke it when he and Andy were doing
the dishes. Now there may be some more examples out there, but I think I
have made a very good case for my Glass Breaking Compellsion by the writers.
