I just finished reading the English novel "Aunt Dimity and the Family Tree"
by Nancy Atherton. It definitely has a Mayberry flare to it. Story takes
place in a small English village. An ordinary woman from the village
passes herself off as a rich tourist while on a trip to Mexico when she
meets a dashing wealthy retired Mexican man. Believing there is no harm
being done as she will be leaving in just a few days she continues the
masquarde while having a wonderful time. Shortly after returning to her
quiet life in the village she receives a letter from her Mexican admirer
saying he is coming to England and plans to stop and spend two days with
her. She tells her friends and says she is going to leave England (
probably plans to go to Nashville) but her friends decide they will help
her poss as the rich woman she claimed to be. So they get the owner of a
large manor house to poss as her brother and she takes on the roll of Lady
Sarah. Her friend arrives and shortly thereafter he announces he can stay
for a week. So the story goes on and they continue the charade. In the
end he discovers that she is a fake, but he also reveals that he too is a
fake. Now if this doesn't sound like Floyd the Gay Deceiver, I don't know
what would. However, this story had a happy ending as both phoneys were
happy the truth was out and they married and lived happily ever after.
