Ken, your post about the back of the watch reminded me of an old Peanuts comic strip. A new boy moved to town and said his name was Five, and in the last panel one of the characters (Snoopy, I think) wondered to himself if it was "5" or "V."
Anyway, I think the watch given to Barney must have had just the numeral 5. It would be cheaper to get just one digit engraved as opposed to four letters, and Barney's friends would have known that would appeal to Barney's thrifty nature.
