I just finished watching Season 1 Disc 1 of Gunsmoke. Episode 5 was entitled Obie Tater, about a character with the same name. The name sounds a lot like a character we're all a little more familiar with. I've never heard this mentioned, but I wonder if Obie was maybe the slightest bit of an inspiration for our Opie Taylor, airing 5 years before TAGS on the same network. I've often heard Opie Cates's name thrown around, but never Obie Tater.
