While watching an episode of Leave it to Beaver today I couldn't help but think how great it would be if someone would create a nostalgic family program called "Leave it to Barney". They could take us back to Mayberry to the time when Andy, Goober, Barney, and Howard were classmates. We could actually see some of the things that they talked about as adults. Maybe an episode would show Vicky Harms biting the end of the snow cone and sucking out all the raspberry syrup. Or we would see Andy and Barney running around Mayberry selling flower seeds, just like Opie and his friends did with the Miracle Salve. One episode could show us Andy building his bridge with the erector set and Barney lighting his father's pipe by striking a match on that rock keepsake he kept in his trunk, Or how about some wonderful classroom scenes of poor Goober standing in the corner for not having his work done? Howard could come to school in a bow tie and jacket and at lunch time Barney could stick his hand in the end of the milk bottle and then not be able to get it out. They could show an episode in Sunday School where Barney falls asleep. They could have Andy living in the same house that he did as sheriff and we could watch Barney stay over night and listen to the two of them laugh and giggle all night long. With all the TV programs today showing kids talking back and saying put downs all the time and talking about sex, wouldn't it be refreshing to see a wonderful show about kids that once again taught family values and real lessons about life. Beautiful story lines could be created to show that wonderful friendship between Andy and Barney during their childhood. Something very special must have occurred when they were children to enable their friendship to withstand the test of time. And most of all wouldn't they be able to come up with another great "Christmas Story" with little Andy and Barney on Christmas morning?
