To answer Wayne and Anne Newsome's question, "Mayberry R.F.D." was a continuation of "The Andy Griffith Show," when Andy left the cast. Ken Berry, fresh off his run on "F Troop," was introduced as farmer and city councilman Sam Jones during the last season of "The Andy Griffith Show" and was now the alpha male of Mayberry. The show ran three seasons from 1968 until that fateful year CBS cancelled "everything with a tree in it," 1971, despite the fact "Mayberry R.F.D." actually finished that season in the top 20.
