Goober was made the official Mayberry Deputy Sheriff in Mayberry RFD. I wonder if they ever considered him for taking Barney's place. I think it would have been a natural event seeing he had so much experience working for the sheriff's department. He could have been hired on a part-time basis; that way he wouldn't have to use the courthouse to work on cars. Or Malcolm could have gotten a visa to stay in the US. Imagine having a deputy who was a former member of the Cold Cream Guards. Or they could have even hired Ernest T. They wouldn't have had to issue him a gun. If he was after any crooks he could just throw one of his bestest rocks at them. That way he could finally afford to marry Romana. If they weren't in a real hurry they could have waited a few years and then hired Opie. Barney taught him the fast draw and he was an expert at using handcuffs and a sling shot. They certainly had plenty of highly qualified candidates right there in good old Mayberry without having to hire someone all the way from Boston.
