Perhaps Andy had a small package of fishhooks in his pocket, and they were planning to dig some worms with a pocket knife or some such. After all, Eagle Eye Annie had not yet learned to dig her own bait.
As far as carrying their catch home, in the original closing credits (check YouTube) Andy and Opie were shown walking back down the same road in the opposite direction carrying some fish on what looked like a long pointy stick poked through the fishes' mouths, as one would do with a stringer. I hear long pointy sticks are also useful if you ever need to get a possum out from under a rock, if you ain't got fire or a good smart dog on ya.
