Many times when I was  kid in the early 60's, my father and I would go fishing
near his old home place on the James River and we never took bait with us.
Near the river bank we'd find a good digging rock and get our night crawlers
that way.  My father would also turn over some rocks to find helgramites which
were sort of like centipedes if I remember correctly.  The main thing I
remember about helgramites is that I didn't want to touch them.  So, just to
assure everyone.  You don't need a tackle box or a pocket full of worms to go
fishing.  I even know people who have used a safety pin as a fish hook, tied to
a piece of string on an old bamboo pole.
