Dewey asked for comments from anyone who attended Mayberry Comes to Westminster, S.C. last weekend.
I did, and couldn't have enjoyed it more. Tom Rusk and his team did a wonderful job bringing our favorite hometown to S.C. The spirit was sweet; the locals were so welcoming; and, except for a brief shower, the weather cooperated beautifully. The storefronts on Main Street were so Mayberryesque; the local barber shop even removed their name, "King's Barber Shop," and replaced it with "Floyd's Barber Shop" just for the weekend. It made the perfect photo op--especially when you could get Floyd (Allan Newsome) to try to cut your hair. There were two parades (America at it's best!) featuring most of the wonderful "imposternators" and the local high school band playing "The Fishing Hole." There was even an election going on for the local sheriff. It was just America at its best. Plus, a beaver came to the festival. Now we all know that, why, every so often, a loaded goat will come to town for the day, but I ask you, where else but "Mayberry" would someone bring a beaver to a parade? I just wish it'd been a posstum that'd been hiding under a rock. You just gotta go next year. You'll love it. Debbie Whisenant Join me for "Life Lessons From Mayberry: It's All There in Black and White," a celebration of The Andy Griffith Show and the biblical truths and life applications found in the beloved TV classic.
