"Chinatown, My Chinatown" also appeared in Episode # 159, titled "Banjo-Playing
Deputy." The out-of-work banjo player, installed soon as a temporary deputy,
was none other than Jerry Van Dyke, who attempted to play the song on banjo and
kazoo, aided by a couple of other assorted percussions instruments. He was
essentially a one-man band, though performance quality was dubious. The song
was performed for the questionable burlesque show appearing at the Carnival.
The Mayberry women were shocked by such vulgar display, but Floyd thought it
was fine, rendering his visionary line, "One can never have too much culture,"
or some such statement! For myself, I also heard "Chinatown, My Chinatown"
when I was a young child. My mom played it on the piano and sang it, and I
still have a vague memory of her sheet music and its cover art work.

"Chinatown, my Chinatown, when the lights are low . . . . "

Have a great Mayberry spring!
