David, I agree with you so much about being glad you grew up when you did
as I feel the same way. Why back then wasn't necessary better in a lot of
ways but they were different in many good ways. When I recall all the
innocent games we played that now are not considered to be politically
correct or are said to not be unsuitable for children. Cops and robbers,
cowboys and Indians, boys chase the girls, mumbly peg, army, and even
"doctor" as toy medical bags with toy implements were very popular when I
was a kid. An American ritual for most boys was when he received his first
Daisy Air Rifle and then advanced to a .22. I still have my single shot
.22 that my brother gave me when I was about 16. I wouldn't part with it
for anything. I am sure my mother would have been referred to social
services if we would have had such a thing, as she left us home alone many
times unsupervised and she allowed my friend and me to walk to the
neighboring town four miles away on the railroad tracks. I suppose I would
have been a sexual pervert as quite often we would go skinny dipping in the
near by creeks. I could go on and on, but I think all those unsupervised
times taught me so many things about getting along with others,
friendships, and self esteem, than anything else. So when I see Opie and
Leon roaming around Mayberry all by themselves it really brings back some
great nostalgic moments. Growing up in a small rural town in the 50's was
the best part of my life. Thanks David, for sharing your great words.
