I had such a great time Friday night driving a retired university employee to his special retirement functions. He had no idea I would be picking him up. He was awaiting, supposedly for a friend, in a parking lot and I pulled in. I activated the light and siren and pulled up next to his car. I was in uniform and walked up to him and showed him my Barney Fife ID. I told him I had received a call and that I was supposed to take him to a restaurant. It was then he caught on to what was going on. When we pulled up the restaurant in the historic part of the city there were two big beautiful signs along the curb that said, "Reserved For Mayberry's Number One Fan". The hostess met him at the car and we escorted him in. Of course by this time he was getting a lot of attention. His wife was sitting in the back seat next to my Moonshiner Prisoner with the Jug of Moonshine. About an hour and a half later I returned to pick him up. I went into the restaurant to get him. As we were leaving people were jokingly asking him if he was under arrest. By this time everyone knew what was going on. I then took him to an Elvis Show at our Regional Arts Theater and again folks who were going to the show got a big kick out of watching us. So I am sure this was an evening that he will be remembering for a long time. He is a real Mayberry fan and it was a pleasure getting to know him. He lives about seventy miles from here and I have a feeling we will be keeping in touch.
