That was character actor Ross Elliott, who also played 'Al Saunders' in the
episode "Taylors in Hollywood." Hundreds of TV episodes to his credit, but
he's probably most recognized as the Director in I LOVE LUCY's "Lucy Does a TV
Commercial."

THE JACK BENNY PROGRAM had a series of episodes circa 1960 - 1961 where
real-life Producer/Director Fred DeCordova was a character, but played by actor
Ross Elliott. Why? Maybe it was something technical, i.e., DeCordova didn't
have an active SAG card. Or, maybe Fred wasn't comfortable in front of the
camera.

A similar situation happened once on I LOVE LUCY. In "Don Juan Is Shelved,"
MGM Studios head Dore Schary was supposed to play himself. He rehearsed for
several days, but backed out due to nervousness. Phil Ober, Vivian Vance's
[then] husband stepped in at the last minute to play the real-life executive.
That's showbiz. (You may also know Phil Ober from costarring in Don Knott's
THE GHOST AND MR. CHICKEN.)

I often see a gentleman who plays Fred De Cordova on the show (Jack
Benny). He was on TAGS. He was in the Esquire Club and played a
stagehand when they went to Florida. He's the one who yelled, "Mr.
CONSIDINE!" Who is this man and why didn't De Cordova play himself? I
also saw the actor that played Wally in "Man in a Hurry" on that show.
Have a great weekend!
