I have often wondered how Sarah managed her job as telephone operator 24/7.
Well, I think I may have discovered a plausible explanation. For
Thanksgiving this year we invited some older folks back from the small town
where I began my teaching career in 1967. While we were reminiscing, our
friend told how her mother was the telephone operator in the town where I
had taught and how she had the switchboard in her house. So I asked her how
her mother managed to handle the phone lines 24 hours a day. She explained
that there was a rule in town that no one would make a call after ten
o'clock at night unless it was a very important emergency. She said the
people were very good about doing just that. She also said if her mother
had something to do on a given day she would have one of her friends or
family members handle the switchboard for her. So maybe that is what they
did in Mayberry. If my memory serves me correctly I believe the only
people we ever see using the phone late at night in Mayberry are Andy and
Barney and it was usually because of police business.
