My Fellow Mayberry Fans, I was so sorry to hear of Emmett's passing. He was a very special person and all of us who loved Andy owe him a great deal of gratitude for the spacial effort he made to keep Andy's legacy visible by way of his marvelous collection of memorabilia, and his continuing love of his friend.
When I was writing my book, Memories of Mayberry, I spent a lot of time in my hometown of Mt. Airy, going through microfiche at the library and talking to the "old timers" to make sure that My memories of growing up there with Andy would be accurately portrayed. Nobody was more important to that process than Emmett. He gave so generously of his time, spending many hours going over his recollections of time with his boyhood friend and the atmosphere of that North Carolina small town in the 1930s and 1940s. I went over the memories I had, along with what other long-time locals recalled, and Emmett added his special flavor to the mix. Although I acknowledged him in the book, titling one chapter, Emmett - Fixin' Andy in Time, he would not let me give him all the credit I knew he deserved. He was truly a gentle and humble man - and a True Friend of Andy Griffith. He will be missed by many. Jewell M.
