In "Ellie Comes to Town" we learn that there is a key for Walker's drugstore hidden above the door and that Andy is allowed to operate the cash register himself. Additionally, in "Guest of Honor" we learn that every shopkeeper in Mayberry has entrusted Barney with keys to their shops. So, when Andy and Barney talked about going to the drugstore on Sunday afternoon to get some ice cream, the drugstore was almost certainly closed, and they were no doubt planning to serve themselves.
