I've been rewatching the original Star Trek series on Blu-ray Disc, and it's
fun to spot "Mayberry" buildings. Many of you already know that several
episodes of Star Trek contain scenes which were shot on the 40 Acres back lot,
which of course is where the exterior scenes for TAGS were filmed.

In the first season of Star Trek, the episodes Miri, Return of the Archons, and
The City on the Edge of Forever (my favorite) all include shots of "Mayberry."
In that last one, Mayberry's movie theater, The Grand, has been redressed as
the 21st Street Mission, and interestingly, it can still be seen as such in
TAGS episodes that were filmed at about the same time. In Miri, the downtown
Mayberry has been made to look like a slum, almost a ghost town. Miri also
includes some high-angle views of "Mayberry" which we never saw on TAGS,
because the camera crews were always careful not to show the full height of
buildings such as the four-story hotel, which would ruin the "small town" feel
of Mayberry.

For complete information about the 40 Acres lot, see Kipp Teague's outstanding
