Holland raised an interesting point about the time Andy and Barney visited the Darlings' cabin. Just how far away was it supposed to be from the courthouse?
The Darlings obviously live in Mayberry County, otherwise Andy would not have been involved in the matter. The size of Mayberry County is about 267 square miles (more on this later). If we assume the country is roughly square, that makes it something like 16 miles on each side, which means that if one were to travel from any corner to the diagonally opposite corner, the distance would be roughly 23 miles. So wherever one is in Mayberry County, the distance to any other point in the county cannot possibly be more than 23 miles away. When Andy and Barney reach the cabin, it appears to be about noon (when outdoors they cast only a very small shadow, so the sun had to be directly overhead). Why did it take them so long to get there? Even if they had to hunt around for a while, it should have taken maybe two hours max. The sheriff would know all of the roads in his own county. How they managed to drive the squad car across the Robert E. Lee Natural Bridge is another mystery. Now then, who can tell me how I deduced the geographical size of Mayberry County? Thinking buckets on!
