One of the things on TAGS that never fails to make me chuckle is the cost of goods and services in and around Mayberry. I love to read the prices of the food in Crawley's and Fowley's Markets. The lady bought a sandwich from Opie at the drugstore for 35 cents. Thelma Lou spent 75 cents on a big breakfast for Gomer when he drove her to Mt. Pilot. He brings back to me the cost of items when I lived in those times.
My mother rented a three bedroom house for $30 a month after selling our four bedroom house of four acres of land for $5,200. I set pins in a bowling alley for 10 cents a line. My mother made 35 cents an hour as a waitress. On Friday nights after setting pins, I could get a fish fry for 75 cents. When I was in 8th grade I wanted to take a girl to the drugstore for cokes and ice cream, so I stopped at the garage where my father worked and got a quarter. Canned vegetables were ten for a dollar. When my mother let me have the car at night my friends each chipped in a quarter for gas and we could get almost four gallons. We could buy a half pint of white milk in a bottle for a penny and chocolate for 2 cents at our school. Movies at the neighboring town were 35 cents. Movies in our town were free on the feed mill wall on Friday nights.
