School buses would not have bought gas from a service station. Back then as now, they had their own tanks and pumps, bought fuel wholesale and filled the buses daily themselves. Farmers bought their gas in bulk from a distributor, no road tax, since farm tractors seldom used the highways but were on fields. And if Farmer John needed to go to town, he backed his car up to the pump and filled his car. Just a little cheating, there!! That takes care of a lot of the fuel question, and Rafe probably mixed a little alcohol in with his to make it last longer, and he being a farmer didn't go to town for gas either. What the Darlings burned in their truck is an enigma as they never bought gas, and didn't have a pump at home.
