Times have changed so much since I was a child growing up in a small mid
western town. This is especially true for today's young boys. They will
be missing so many of the “simple pleasures” of a time gone by. I wish
that every young boy in America could do the following.

Carry a jackknife.

Go fishing with a cane pole and a tin can full of worms.

Stop at a drug store for a nickel ice cream cone.

Ride a bike over the rubber hose that made the bell ding at the gas station.

Own a Daisy air rifle.

Swim in a creek on a hot summer day.

Walk home from school on a fall day listening to the dry leaves underfoot.

Accept a quarter from a stranger in the woods without having to be afraid.

Sleep on an ironing board between two chairs when there is overnight
company.

Go to a carnival with just your friends.

Go trick or treating after dark without having to take your parents along.

Catch fire flies and keep them in a canning jar on your bedroom dresser.

Lie in bed at night and listen to a baseball game on the radio.

Go to school knowing there is no one there who will hurt you.

Take the prettiest girl in school to a church picnic, even if she has
freckles and missing teeth.
