Wonderful time at Mayberry Days. Started with our pork chop sandwich at
Snappy's, then made our way up to Mayberry on Main to visit with the fine
folks there, Darrel, Debbie and Samantha Miles and bought a couple of new
shirts. That is the place for shirts and caps!! And most anything else you
want!
We turned in our items for the silent auction meeting up with old friend
Bobby Butler who was getting his show tickets for next year. We then toured
the Museum and met Eric Lowery, "The Little Fat Mayor" Pike, but he is not
fat!! Such a nice guy!
We got checked in to the hotel after visiting the graves of Eng and Chang
Bunker, the original Siamese Twins, and got settled in.
Friday was the Opening Ceremonies/Mayor's Proclamation. Later we went to
Bluebird and had lunch, one of the best cheeseburgers I ever had, and the
service was just as good as the burgers!!
Then came time for the trivia contests, and were they hard!! I thought I
knew ONE but missed that one! Pat Bullins was winner again and out of 22
points she got 14! That is unusual for her. Dennis came in second with 13
and they are both to be congratulated. Even the children's Trivia was hard for
me!! I think I knew one!
Saturday gave us the parade down Main St., and it was dry for the first
time in 4 years!! Yippeeee!!!! After the parade we took in the items on the
Silent Auction tables but bid on nothing. We had donated several items, some
of which were used as archives for Surry Arts from what I understand, and
the rest helped bring in funds for SAC.
To take a break from the crowds, we rode out to old Rockford Village, the
one time county seat of Surry County. Amazing old country store with more
kinds of candy than you could sample in a week!!
Then came Col.Tim's Talent Time, opening with Barney and the Choir episode
and it was, as usual, hilarious. Things moved slowly for a while, but it
was easy going and laid back, relaxing, until....my goodness!! Barney was
giving an exhibition of his Karate skills to Floyd, and you know, that mean
old Floyd took Barney to the floor!! Really!! Accidental, nobody hurt, but
they were surprised and laughing over it so all's well that ends well!! My
goodness, LeRoy and Roland, the Country Boys together at Mayberry Days for
the first time, and Goober 2, George Lindsay Jr., what a hoot he is!! Maggie
"Charlene" Mancuso, Karen Knotts, James Best went from Jim Lindsey to
Rosco P. Coltrane!! Margaret Kerry, and I am sure I am leaving out someone,
but
the Tribute Artists Floyd, Ernest T, Barney, Aunt Bee, Brisco, Howard, and
we missed George Spence, Thelma Lou Betty Lynn, and others who were not
able to be there.
Sunday was the most wonderful Memorial Service for Emmett Forrest, the man
who started and operated the Andy Griffith Museum for many years. Emmett
was a friend to all who knew him, and he knew a lot of people! I had the
honor of taking some photos of Emmett and his wife with Andy and Cindy when
they were in Raleigh for the Andy/Opie statue dedication, and gave Emmett a
copy of the photos.
After the memorial service, we all went to Sagebrush for an early lunch and
to say our goodbyes, but for goodness sakes, somebody please...try to get
all of us in ONE group instead of FOUR!! Reserve a whole side of the
restaurant if need be, but let's us all eat together for once!! This should
be
the time when we are all equals, not separated by class or whatever!! Just
my humble opinion!!
So, another Mayberry Days came to a close, nice, cool, sometimes cloudy,
sometimes partly cloudy, but no....hear that??? NO rain!!! None!!
Check in with you later!!
Welford the CameraNut....hoping to post some photos to Facebook by the end
of the day. I tried earlier and then it told me I could only do 42 at the
time!! So, I quit until another time...
Happy Spirit of Mayberry to everyone!!
