I recently watched the 4th-season episode "The Rumor," and something jumped out
at me as I watched it. When Barney tells Andy that he and Thelma Lou are going
to take Andy and Helen out to dinner, Barney asks, "Can you let me have five?"
Of course, it's funny that Barney asks to borrow five dollars right after
offering to pay for dinner. However, Barney knows that they are not going out
to dinner at all. He and Thelma Lou will stall until 8:00 and then take Andy
and Helen over to the Taylor house for their surprise engagement party. They
keep arguing over where Barney will take them all for dinner until Andy and
Helen get thoroughly exasperated. Then when Barney finally agrees they'll just
go over to Andy's house so they can get some sandwiches, Andy says, "So do I
get my five dollars back?" So why did Barney ask for five dollars?? It really
doesn't make any sense, except to get a couple laughs.
