Just three observations that may lead to a discussion: A. I have often wondered about why none of the professional people in Mayberry didn't have either a receptionist or a secretary to help them with their jobs. For instance, it appears that neither Mayor Pike nor Mayor Stoner had neither a receptionist or secretary. The mayor's office was directly off the hallway above the courthouse and we never see or hear about anyone helping out the mayors. If fact, I am not sure if we even see as much as a typewriter. So I wonder how these elected officials managed to conduct all their meetings and do all the endless paperwork and written correspondences without any help. We have the same scenario with Sheriff Andy not having any help. County Clerk, Howard Sprague, also had to conduct the all the county business with no help from a receptionist or secretary. And as we have often seen, these three fellows do spend a lot of time during the day away from their respective offices.
2. In a related topic, I have also noticed that whenever there is a meeting with the mayor, and later with councilman Sam Jones, and again even when Andy is overseeing a trial or hearing as Justice of the Peace, there is no one there acting as a secretary to take the official minutes, which are required by law. Even when Andy goes on trial no one is taking minutes of the event. Curious Curious. C. In an unrelated topic: We have discussed previously the difference in the term pop and soda. Now I am wondering about the difference between a Drug Store and a Pharmacy. Every small town in our area where I grew up had what was called a "Drug Store". Not one of them used the term pharmacy. Now they all were relatively small and they all had a soda fountain like Walker's. Now in Mayberry we had Walker's Drug Store and the Franklyn Pharmacy. Just wondering of there was a reason why one was a Drug Store and the other was a Pharmacy? I thought seeing the days are getting shorter and the nights are getting longer you good folks might have some extra time to think about this and perhaps share some of your expert insights.
