I cannot speak about gas prices in Mayberry or even in North Carolina, since I 
have always lived here in Oklahoma.   But let me tell you what happened here in 
Oklahoma in late 1973.    On October 6, 1973 the Arab countries attacked 
Israel.    On October 15, Richard Nixon sent aid to Israel.   On October 16, 
1973, OPEC announced that they would double their prices for oil.   It took a 
few weeks to arrive here in Oklahoma, but late in 1973 the price of gasoline 
doubled overnight.    One Thursday gasoline cost 30 cents a gallon, like it had 
for 50 years, and the next day it was 60 cents a gallon.   An amusing sidelight 
to the story is that about half the gas stations had gas pumps (they were 
manual pumps in those days) that would not go up to 60 cents a gallon.    The 
top price on the pump was 49.9, no one had ever dreamed the price of gas would 
go above that.    The stations were forced to post a handwritten sign on the 
pumps that said "The price on the pump is for 1/2 a gallon of gas
 , whatever the pump reads, you owe double that

prices for eggs, from 40 cents a dozen to 44 cents a dozen.   Wait a minute, I 
knew I should have paid more attention in Miss Arnett's math class.
