I cannot speak about gas prices in Mayberry or even in North Carolina, since I
have always lived here in Oklahoma. But let me tell you what happened here in
Oklahoma in late 1973. On October 6, 1973 the Arab countries attacked
Israel. On October 15, Richard Nixon sent aid to Israel. On October 16,
1973, OPEC announced that they would double their prices for oil. It took a
few weeks to arrive here in Oklahoma, but late in 1973 the price of gasoline
doubled overnight. One Thursday gasoline cost 30 cents a gallon, like it had
for 50 years, and the next day it was 60 cents a gallon. An amusing sidelight
to the story is that about half the gas stations had gas pumps (they were
manual pumps in those days) that would not go up to 60 cents a gallon. The
top price on the pump was 49.9, no one had ever dreamed the price of gas would
go above that. The stations were forced to post a handwritten sign on the
pumps that said "The price on the pump is for 1/2 a gallon of gas
, whatever the pump reads, you owe double that
amount"................................................................................................................................................Orville
Hendricks - Mount Pilot Butter and Egg Man. I immediately had to double my
prices for eggs, from 40 cents a dozen to 44 cents a dozen. Wait a minute, I
knew I should have paid more attention in Miss Arnett's math class.
