I think I have finally hit upon the answer as to where the NFL got the idea to use instant replays to review the calls of umpires and referees. I do believe it all began in Mayberry when someone within the NFL upper echelons saw Episode 193 "The Ball Game". Andy is umpiring Opie's baseball game and he calls Opie out as he slides into home plate which results in Opie's team losing the game. Helen happened to take a picture of the call and she later shows Aunt Bee that the picture definitely proves that Andy made the wrong call and Opie was indeed safe. Well, I think the person within the NFL saw this episode and the seed was planted for his idea of using instant replays to review questionable calls.
What say ye all to this theory?
