While on the subject of similar plots and characters from The Great Gildersleeve, I found a similar plot to an episode of TAGS in the 1957 Episode titled "Shadow of a Man" from the The Life and Legend of Wyatt Earp starring our cool and calm Hugh O'Brian. In "Shadow of a Man", Earp leaves town for the day and leaves Deputy Norton in charge. Deputy Norton has to face several challenges throughout his one-day reign as Chief Deputy, including dealing with the local mayor. He tries his best to emulate the Marshall in his decisions.
